How to prepare for a tattoo

Getting a tattoo is an exciting and meaningful experience, whether it’s your first or your fiftieth. At Green Lotus Tattoo in Brunswick, we believe that good preparation makes all the difference. A bit of planning and care beforehand can help you feel confident, reduce discomfort, and get the best possible result from your session.

Your tattoo is going to be with you forever—so it's worth spending time choosing the right design and the right artist. At Green Lotus Tattoo, our artists each specialise in different styles, from fine line and blackwork to neo-traditional and realism. We always recommend researching their portfolios on our website or Instagram, then booking a consult to refine your ideas with your chosen artist.

Healthy skin holds ink better and heals faster. In the week leading up to your appointment, moisturise daily, especially if you have dry or flaky skin. Stay out of the sun to avoid sunburn. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated, and avoid heavy exfoliation or using harsh skincare products on the area to be tattooed.

Make sure you’ve had a full night's sleep before your tattoo. Being tired can make you more sensitive to pain and slow down your body’s healing response. On the day of your appointment, eat a good meal and bring snacks if you're sitting for a long session. Low blood sugar can lead to dizziness or fainting, especially during larger pieces.

Alcohol and blood-thinning medications like aspirin should be avoided for at least 24 hours before your session. These can increase bleeding, which can affect how the ink settles and how your skin heals.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area you're getting tattooed. If you're unsure, ask ahead of time. At Green Lotus Tattoo, we provide clean, private spaces and can offer towels or covers to help you feel comfortable throughout the process.

Even small tattoos can cause discomfort, so it helps to come in with the right mindset. Bring headphones and a playlist or podcast if that helps you stay relaxed. Trust in your artist—they’re experienced and will guide you through the process with care.

Your artist will go through aftercare with you and provide written instructions. Green Lotus Tattoo takes aftercare seriously, because healing properly is just as important as getting the tattoo itself. We’ll help you understand how to clean the area, what to avoid, and when to reach out with questions.

Located on Sydney Road in Brunswick, Green Lotus Tattoo offers a welcoming and professional environment for clients of all experience levels. We’re passionate about creating art that lasts, and we’re here to support you from design to aftercare. So if you’re planning your next piece, take the time to prepare—and know that we’ll be right there with you every step of the way.
