How to Heal After Laser Tattoo Removal at Green Lotus Laser
Getting a tattoo removed is a big step — and just like getting a tattoo, the aftercare plays a crucial role in how well your skin heals and how effective the treatment is. At Green Lotus Laser in Brunswick, we use advanced laser technology (including the Cynosure Revlite Si) to deliver safe and effective results. But what you do after your session is just as important as the treatment itself.
Here’s everything you need to know about healing after your laser tattoo removal session.
Immediately After Your Treatment
It’s normal to experience redness, swelling, and a slight burning sensation in the treated area — much like a mild sunburn. Some people may also see blistering or scabbing within the first 24 to 48 hours. These are all part of your body’s natural healing response and mean the laser is doing its job.
We recommend:
- Applying a cold compress (wrapped in a clean cloth) for 10–15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.
- Keeping the area elevated (if possible) to minimise inflammation.
General Aftercare Tips for Optimal Healing
- Keep the Area Clean and Dry
Gently clean the area with lukewarm water and mild soap once a day. Pat dry with a clean towel. Do not rub or scrub. - Use an Antibacterial Ointment
Apply a thin layer of recommended ointment (we’ll let you know what’s best at your session) to prevent infection and aid healing. Cover the area with a sterile dressing if needed, especially during the first few days. - Avoid Picking or Scratching
This is key. Blisters and scabs are part of the natural healing process. Picking at them can lead to scarring and slow the fading process. Let your skin do the work. - Avoid Sun Exposure
Sunlight can irritate the healing skin and may lead to pigmentation issues. Keep the area covered or apply a high-SPF sunscreen (once the skin has closed). Ideally, avoid direct sun for at least 2 weeks after treatment. - No Soaking or Swimming
Avoid baths, pools, spas, and saunas until the area is fully healed (usually 7–10 days). These environments can introduce bacteria and increase the risk of infection. - Skip the Gym (Briefly)
Excessive sweating or friction from tight clothing can irritate the treated area. Take it easy for the first few days post-treatment, especially if the tattoo is in a high-friction spot. - Stay Hydrated and Healthy
Your immune system is your greatest ally during tattoo removal. Drinking water, eating well, and getting enough rest can all help speed up the process.
What to Expect Over Time
Fading happens gradually — your body needs time to break down and clear the fragmented ink particles. It’s normal to see more fading several weeks after the initial swelling subsides. Multiple sessions are usually needed (spaced 6–8 weeks apart), and your commitment to aftercare plays a big role in how quickly and clearly your tattoo fades.
